I recently found out that my dad and I have another thing in common other than our very ill tempers. When he first started working, the very first thing he bought with his own money is a camera, and a very good one at that. I bought a camera as well, and it has served me well, but it has long since retired, since cameras today aren’t built to last as long as the old ones are.
Anyway, my mom ended up using this camera, my dad’s Yashica Electro 35 GSN, because she was a much better photographer than he ever was or will be. But since the dawn of smaller, more compact digital cameras, she has kept this in the closet hidden from us for a decade.
But now it will be hidden no more. I have asked her for it, and she told me to take very good care of it. She knows I have always had a passion for taking photographs, and I would not call it photography just yet because I haven’t had any formal training at all. But yes, I do have a great passion for taking photographs, and especially when I am using film cameras instead of the digital ones that everyone is going crazy for these days. And so I was so happy when she told me that I could keep it and use it as long as I promise to take good care of it.
And so this weekend, this will be my project. I will be restoring this baby to good health, and will be using it to practice taking interesting photos of anything and everything around me.
I’ve yet to come up with a name for this baby though. Any suggestions?
